Explanation of Newspaper Headlines for English Learners

Many students have difficulty understanding newspaper headlines. This is because newspaper headlines are often incomplete sentences (i.e. Difficult Times Ahead). Here is a guide to the most common exceptions found in newspaper headlines. Noun Phrases Headlines often contain a noun phrase with no verb. A noun phrase describes a noun (i.e. around strange, exotic people). Here are some examples of noun phrase headlines: Under Pressure from BossUnexpected VisitOverwhelming Response of Voters Its useful to ask yourself questions such as: From what? About what? From whom? To whom? etc. when reading these type of headlines. By asking yourself these questions, you can begin preparing yourself for the article. This practice helps the brain prepare itself by starting to think about vocabulary related to the subject. Heres an example: Unexpected VisitThe questions I can ask myself are: From whom? Why was the visit unexpected? Who was visited? etc. these questions will help focus my mind on vocabulary related to relationships, traveling, surprises, important reasons for visits, etc. Noun Strings Another common headline form is a string of three, four or more nouns together (i.e. Country Leader Question Time). These can be difficult because the words dont appear related by verbs or adjectives. Here are some more examples: Widow Pension Pay CommitteeLandscaping Company Disturbance RegulationsMustang Referral Customer Complaint In the case of noun strings, its helpful to try to connect the ideas by reading backward. Of course, you need to use your imagination for this! Various Verb Changes There are a number of verb changes made to headlines. The most common are: Simple tenses used instead of continuous or perfect forms. The infinitive form refers to the future. She then could come and support me to sleep again, by slowly rubbing my back and kissing me on the forehead. Every morning I could call my mother to take me to the toilets. In the toilets. However, she found it very difficult to toilet train me. I used to mess up most of the times. Sometimes my mother could get frustrated and pinch me on the cheeks. However, after studying the types of temperament traits, I have come to realize that this could have been caused by my irregular bowel movements. To summarise, my feisty temperament during childhood made me always impatient, noisy, unable to adapt quickly. I used to disturb my older brother, who was at that time in his university studies by sometimes tearing his books, distracting him in his study room and calling him up so that we can play together. 2. Temperament affected my relationship with my parents. I think my mother did not understand my temperament. I can conclude this from the way she used to react to my behaviors. Sometimes she used to feel stressed and even avoid interacting with me. I used to ask her questions only to see her with a frown face. However, as a child, I could not understand why she looked upset. My mother often became frustrated whenever I called her to my bedroom. She used to shout at me at times and even pinch me on the cheeks. However, this could not make me quiet as I could cry even louder. Seeing that I was not keeping calm, she could relax and sing me lullabies. From her behaviors, I can conclude that my mum saw me as a difficult child to manage. This caused our relationship to be tasteless. Most of the times she looked unhappy with me. Being a child, I was too naive to understand why my mother seemed upset and unhappy. I have only come to know this after studying the types of temperaments typical in children. I found some time to discuss this with her, and she felt regretful about it. Joy Luck CLub In Amy Tan's novel, The Joy Luck Club, explores the relationships and experiences of four Chinese mothers and four Chinese-American daughters. The difference in upbringing of these women born during the first quarter of this century in China, and their daughters were born in California, is undeniable. From the beginning of the novel, you hear Suyuan Woo telling the story of "The Joy Luck Club, a group started by some Chinese women during World War II. "We feasted, we laughed, we played games, lost and won, we told the best stories. And each week, we could hope to be lucky. That hope was our only joy." (p. 12) Really, this was their only joy. The mothers grew up during dangerous times in China. They all were taught, "to desire nothing, to swallow other people's misery, to eat [their] own bitterness." (p. 241) Though many of them did not grow up terribly poor, they all had a certain respect for their elders, and for life itself. These Chinese mothers were all taught to be honorable, to the point of sacrificing their own lives to keep any family members' promise. Instead of their daughters, who "can promise to come to dinner, but if she wants to watch a favorite movie on TV, she no longer has a promise" (p. 42), "To Chinese people, fourteen carats isn't real gold . . . [my bracelets] must be twenty-four carats, pure inside and out." (p. 42) Towards the end of the book, there is a definite line between the differences of the two generations. Lindo Jongs daughter, Waverly, does not even know four Chinese words. She describes the complete difference and incompatibility of the two worlds she tried to connect for her daughter, American circumstances and Chinese character. Waverly explains that there is no lasting shame in being born in America, and that as a minority you are the first in line for scholarships. Most importantly, she notes, "In America, nobody says you have to keep the circumstances somebody else gives you." (p. 289) It was easy for Lindo to grow up in America, to accept circumstances there and to get accustomed to living in America, and to grow up as any American citizen. As a Chinese mother, though, she also wanted Waverly to learn the importance of her Chinese heritage. She tried to teach her Chinese-American daughter "How to obey parents and listen to your mother's mind. How not to show your own thoughts, to put your feelings behind your face so you can take advantage of hidden opportunities . . . How to know your own worth and polish it, never flashing it around like a cheap ring." (p. 289) The American-born daughters never grasp on to these traits, and as the book shows that they became completely different from their purely Chinese parents. They never gained a sense of real respect for their elders, or for their Chinese background. In the end, they are completely different from what their parents planned them to be. By the stories and information given by each individual in The Joy Luck Club, it is clear to me just how different a Chinese-American person is from their parents or older relatives. I find that the fascinating trials and experiences that these Chinese mothers went through are a testament to their enduring nature, and constant devotion to their elders. Their daughters, on the other hand, show that pure Chinese blood can be changed completely through just one generation. They have become American not only in their speech, but also in their thoughts, actions and lifestyles. This novel has not only given great insight into the Chinese way of thinking and living, but it has also shown the great contrast that occurs from generation to generation, in the passing on of ideas and traditions.
